About Math Quiz

A timed arithmetic drill: questions appear one after another and you answer as many as you can before the clock runs out. It trains recall of number facts rather than calculation method.

What it actually trains

Speed here comes from retrieval, not from computing. A practised solver does not calculate 7 ร— 8 โ€” they remember it. Repetition moves individual facts from the slow path (working them out) to the fast path (recognising them), which is why scores climb steeply at first and then plateau.

Use it as a diagnostic: note which questions you hesitate on rather than which you get wrong. Hesitation marks the facts still on the slow path โ€” usually the middle of the times tables, 6ร—7 through 8ร—9 โ€” and those are the ones worth drilling deliberately.

Why do I make mistakes I would never make on paper?

Time pressure narrows attention and encourages pattern-matching over checking. Under a clock the brain accepts a plausible answer rather than verifying it, so errors cluster around near-misses โ€” 56 for 7ร—9 โ€” instead of being random.

Is speed drilling worth it for a student?

For number facts, yes: fluent recall frees working memory for the actual problem in multi-step maths. It is not a substitute for understanding why an operation works, and a student who is fast but cannot explain a method has learned only half of it.
