About Memory Game

A memory game turns face-down cards into a test of recall: flip two at a time, keep them if they match, turn them back if they do not. Every failed pair still gives you information, which is what makes the game winnable rather than random.

How to play

Cards start face down in a grid. Flipping two that match removes them; a mismatch flips both back after a moment. The game ends when the board is cleared, and your score is usually measured in moves or time rather than in matches found — since the number of matches is fixed.

The technique that works: on the first pass, flip cards in a fixed reading order rather than at random. You will match little early, but you learn positions systematically instead of building a patchy map. From the second pass onward almost every flip becomes an informed guess.

Why does random flipping feel faster but score worse?

Because unstructured flips overwrite each other in memory. Position recall is strongest when it is tied to an order — top-left to bottom-right — so a systematic sweep produces a mental map you can actually query, while scattered flipping produces isolated fragments that fade.

Does this actually train memory?

It trains this specific task — visuospatial recall of paired locations — and improvement transfers weakly to unrelated memory tasks. Treat gains as practice at the game rather than a general upgrade to how well you remember things.
