About Word Rush

A timed word game: form as many valid words as you can from the letters given before the clock stops. Scoring usually rewards longer words, so the trade-off is between many short finds and a few long ones.

How scoring shapes strategy

When longer words score disproportionately more, hunting for one long word can outscore a dozen three-letter ones — but only if you find it. A reliable approach is to bank short words first, then spend remaining time extending them: add -s, -ed, -er, -ing to what you already found.

Work from the vowels. Fix the vowels in your head and try consonants around them rather than scanning letters at random. Common English patterns — consonant-vowel-consonant, then a suffix — surface far more words per second than free association.

Why do I miss obvious words?

Because the letters are presented in an arbitrary order and your reading system keeps trying to parse that order as-is. Physically rearranging the tiles, or mentally grouping them into pairs, breaks the fixation and usually reveals words that were invisible a moment earlier.

Does playing this improve vocabulary?

It sharpens retrieval of words you already know more than it adds new ones. The gain is in speed of access — useful for crosswords, Scrabble and similar games — while genuine vocabulary growth comes from reading, where words arrive with context and meaning attached.
