About Percentage Calculator

The three calculations people mix up
'What is 20% of 80' multiplies: 80 × 0.20 = 16. '16 is what percent of 80' divides: 16 ÷ 80 = 20%. 'Increase 80 by 20%' adds to the base: 80 × 1.20 = 96. The third is the one that goes wrong most often, because people add the result of the first calculation to a different base than the one they used.
How do I remove VAT from a total?
Divide, do not subtract. With 20% VAT, a gross of 120 has a net of 120 ÷ 1.20 = 100, and the VAT is 20. Subtracting 20% from 120 gives 96, which is wrong — because the 20% was calculated on the net, not on the gross.
Percentage points or percent?
They are different and the distinction matters. Moving from 5% to 7% is a rise of 2 percentage points, but a 40% increase. Reports that quote the larger-sounding figure without saying which one is meant are a common source of misleading statistics.
