What the record shows

WHOIS is the public registry of domain registrations. The most useful fields are the creation date, the expiry date, the registrar and the name servers. Creation date is a genuine signal of how long a site has existed; name servers reveal which DNS or hosting provider is actually in control.

The field that tells you most: creation date. A domain registered three weeks ago and presenting itself as an established company is worth a second look, and it is one of the quickest checks available when assessing an unfamiliar online shop.

Why is the owner's name hidden?

Because of privacy law and privacy services. Since GDPR, registries redact personal data for individual registrants across Europe and increasingly elsewhere, and most registrars offer proxy registration that replaces contact details with their own. Redacted contact details are now normal and are not a sign of wrongdoing.

What can I do with an expiry date?

For a domain you own, it is the number to watch — an expired domain can be lost within weeks and is often bought immediately by someone else. Enable auto-renew and keep the registrar's contact email current, because the renewal warnings go to the address in this record.
