Inclusive or exclusive counting
There are two valid answers to 'how many days between the 1st and the 5th': four, if you count the gaps, or five, if you count both endpoints. This calculator reports the difference — the gap count. Contracts, hospital stays and hotel bookings often count differently, so check which convention applies before relying on the number.
How are months counted when they differ in length?
Month and year spans are approximate by nature: from 31 January to 28 February is one month, and so is 1 March to 1 April, though one is 28 days and the other 31. When precision matters — interest, penalties, contractual periods — use the day count and let the day count govern.
Do leap years affect the result?
Yes, and the calculator handles them from the calendar rather than by adding 0.25 days a year. A span crossing 29 February 2028 will be one day longer than the same span a year earlier. This is exactly why day counts should be taken from a calendar rather than estimated from year fractions.
