Why nonsense Latin and not English
Lorem ipsum comes from a first-century BC text by Cicero, scrambled since the 1500s by printers. It is used because it is meaningless: readers do not stop to read it, so they judge the typography and spacing rather than the words. Fill a mockup with real English and every reviewer comments on the copy instead of the design.
When should I not use lorem ipsum?
For anything where the words carry the design decision β navigation labels, buttons, form fields, error messages, headlines. Latin filler hides the fact that your German translation is twice as long, or that 'Submit' and 'Send confirmation email' need different button widths. Content-first design uses real or realistic copy for exactly this reason.
Does placeholder text ever reach production?
