About Typing Speed Test

Measures your typing speed in words per minute along with accuracy. Type the shown text as it appears; the result reflects both how fast you type and how much you had to correct.

How WPM is calculated

The standard defines a word as five characters including spaces, so WPM is characters typed รท 5 รท minutes elapsed. This makes results comparable regardless of word length. Gross WPM counts everything typed; net WPM subtracts errors โ€” and net is the number that matters, because typing fast with mistakes is slower overall once correction time is included.

Where the numbers sit: around 40 wpm is average for an adult, 60โ€“70 is comfortably fast, and above 90 is professional-transcription territory. Accuracy below about 95% usually means you are typing above your reliable speed.

Should I aim for speed or accuracy first?

Accuracy, always. Every error costs the keystroke, the backspace and the retype โ€” roughly three times the cost of getting it right. Deliberately typing 10% slower until accuracy passes 98%, then letting speed return, produces a higher net WPM than pushing for raw speed.

Does touch typing actually make a difference?

Substantially, but not because fingers move faster. Touch typing removes the need to look down, so your eyes stay on the source text and you catch errors as they happen. Learning it properly costs a few frustrating weeks of slower typing, and that dip is why most people abandon it before the payoff.
