About the Discount Calculator

Shop tags, coupon codes and "extra 10% off at checkout" offers all hide the same question: what will I actually pay? This calculator answers it three ways โ€” the price after a discount, the discount percentage between an old and a new price, and the original price when you only know what you paid.

How a discount is calculated

sale price = original ร— (1 โˆ’ discount รท 100). To find the percentage between two prices: discount % = (original โˆ’ sale) รท original ร— 100. To go back to the original: original = sale รท (1 โˆ’ discount รท 100).

Worked example: a 120.00 jacket at 25% off costs 120 ร— 0.75 = 90.00, saving 30.00. If a 90.00 jacket was "25% off", the original price was 90 รท 0.75 = 120.00 โ€” not 90 + 25% = 112.50.

Stacked discounts do not add up

20% off followed by an extra 10% off is not 30% off. The second discount applies to the already reduced price: 100 โ†’ 80 โ†’ 72, which is a 28% total discount. Use the optional extra discount field to see the real combined figure.

Discount versus markup

A price that drops by 50% has to rise by 100% to get back where it started. Percent changes are always relative to the starting price, which is why "was 200, now 100" is 50% off but "was 100, now 200" is a 100% increase.
