About the VAT Calculator
Value added tax is charged as a percentage on top of a net price. This calculator works in both directions: give it a net price and it adds the tax, or give it a price that already includes tax and it tells you how much of it is VAT. It accepts any rate, so it works for the UK, the EU or anywhere else that uses a VAT or GST system.
The two formulas
Adding VAT: gross = net ร (1 + rate). Removing VAT: net = gross รท (1 + rate). The VAT amount is always the difference between the two.
The most common mistake
To remove VAT, people often multiply the gross price by the rate: 300 ร 20% = 60. That is wrong, because the 20% was charged on the net price, not on the gross. The correct VAT inside 300.00 is 50.00. Dividing by 1.20 avoids the error.
Rounding
Results are shown to two decimal places. Invoicing systems round VAT per line or per invoice, which can create a one-cent difference on long invoices. If your total differs by a cent from your accounting software, this is usually why.
